Classrooms for Children Orphaned by AIDS in Kenya

“SAVE THE CHILD, HEAL THE NATION!”

This is Dr. Meshack Isiaho’s original motto for the Crossroads Springs Institute that he founded. He recognized that every child needs quality, loving care and education to maximize their full potential, but especially the most vulnerable… those orphaned by AIDS in his community. The school was started in 2003, and under Dr. Isiaho's direction and devotion to the school's mission, and with a caring staff, the Crossroads Springs children are being given the opportunity to grow into independent educated young people who will become Kenya's future.

WHY IS A NEW SCHOOL BUILDING NEEDED?

Crossroads Springs Institute currently provides classes for over 200 children from Early Childhood through Grade 6. Food, clothing, medical check-ups are also provided. Due to the increasing number of children in need, the school has outgrown the original building that was intended for 60-100 children. With no space left for classroom expansion or much needed dormitory space, the need for a new building has become critical.

As Construction Continues Two New Classrooms are Ready to Enter!

Last year Dr. Isiaho proposed that a new school building be constructed with 8 spacious classrooms, staff offices and bathrooms. With a new classroom building, children could be educated through Grade 8, take the Primary school "leaving" exam and continue on to secondary school. The old building could then be used for Early Childhood classes, dormitories for the most needy children, dining and other school activities. Currently children are housed by willing guardians in the community.

 Classroom Building Floor Plan

Working with local architects, Dr. Isiaho designed a three-story structure at a proposed cost of $150,000 to compliment the original school structure.

THE CHALLENGE!

The challenge is to quickly raise the additional funds needed to complete the construction. To date, nearly $30,000 has been raised, allowing the foundation, ground floor slab and walls, and the first floor slab to be erected. This phase provides 4 classrooms, hopefully ready to be used by students and staff later this year.

However, the challenge now is to quickly raise the additional $120,000 to fully equip the ground floor and then to complete the construction of the other two floors. With a successful fund drive, hopefully these monies can be raised in months rather than the years it would take using only the present supporter donation efforts, and occasional general fund raisers.

HOW MIGHT INDIVIDUALS AND GROUPS HELP?

Contributions by individuals, groups, corporations or charitable foundations could be directed in several ways.

For example:

“Adopt” a portion of the building (with naming opportunities.)

o        For a gift of $50,000 or more, a sign with the donor name at the main building entrance.

o        For $20,000-$50,000, the donor name on one of the floors

o        For $5,000-$20,000, the donor name on a classroom door

o        For $500-$5,000, the donor name on a student desk

o        For $50-$500, the donor name on a brick on the Donor Wall

Other fund drive activities may be organized, such as a major automobile raffle, or a mini-telethon. Suggestions are always welcome.

NOTE: Building fund contributions and operating expense contributions are kept in separate accounts.  Donors may indicate how they would like their contribution to be used.
